Kampong Kapor Family Service Centre

Kampong Kapor Family Service Centre (KKFSC) services a rather unique geographical area mainly covering two key estates – Jalan Besar and Kampong Glam.  Nearly 16,000 units of 1 to 5 room HDB flats occupy these two areas and about 4000 of them are 1 and 2 room rental flats.  This precinct is home to people of many races and nationalities and we have a large proportion of residents 60 years old and above living in this community. The majority of our clients are low-income earners and the elderly.

Kampong Kapor Family Service Centre is a joint community outreach of the Kampong Kapor Methodist Church (link – http://www.kkmc.org.sg ) and Methodist Welfare Services (MWS). It receives some funding support from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and National Council of Social Service (NCSS).

Our Programmes
For Children and Youth
Learning Centre

The Learning Centre (LC) seeks to give children an opportunity to gain literacy through its English Remedial Language Programme and regain self-confidence that has been lowered due to frequent experiences of failure. Most of these children lack the opportunity to learn English and hence have difficulties coping in school. A psychologist screens each child before entry and the respective teachers will plan an individualised programme which includes lessons twice a week. A bi-annual screening by the psychologist will chart their progress. The children are also offered holiday programmes twice a year together with children in the neighbourhood. Needs of the family are also looked into and assistance provided accordingly.
Eligibility:  Students between five and nine years, with a score of 40 and below in English.

KidsREAD
The kidsREAD Club is a collaboration with the National Library Board to promote a love for reading and cultivate good reading habits among all young Singaporeans, in particular children from lower-income families.
Our Club aims to provide a platform for children to interact with others in English as well as to improve their vocabulary. Most importantly, we hope to work with the families as well, to monitor the welfare of the children in case of abuse and neglect. The Club meets once a week for an hourly session of story telling and small group activities.

Eligibility: Children aged between four and eight from lower income families.

LightHouse
Lighthouse comprises two parts – Supervised Study Group (SSG) and Good it’s Friday (GisF). SSG is a one-to-one mentoring programme to help children who are not performing well in school. Volunteers help guide them in their schoolwork, serve as role models and mentors. GisF, which is run by social workers, aims to inculcate lifeskills to the above students through groupwork sessions and workshops.

Eligibility: Children from Primary 1 to 6 who have difficulty coping in school and have little or no support at home.

School Social Work

KKFSC provides school social work to some of the schools in our neighbourhood. The programmes are preventive, developmental or remedial and are specially designed for the particular needs of the respective schools. We partner key players in our community, such as the Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports (MCYS) and National Council of Social Service (NCSS) to run School Family Education (SFE) and School Social Work To Empower Pupils to Utilise Potential (Step-Up) services.

SFE
adopts a holistic family learning model, equipping parents with effective parenting skills and training them to be parent facilitators, helping school staff to enhance their family life and balance work life, and providing students with life skills training.

Farrer Park Primary School is our SFE partner.

Step-Up focuses on students at-risk of leaving the school system prematurely. We work with the school in collaboration with the students’ families and the community.

Farrer Park Primary School, Hong Wen School and Balestier Hill Secondary School are our partners for Step-Up.

For the Elderly
Growing Old Living and Leaving (GOAL )

The Kampong Kapor Elderly Centre has been serving the population in Jalan Besar since 1996. We have progressed from a drop-in centre, which provided mainly recreational activities, to a service provider with activities and projects to cater to a larger group of elderly addressing their social, emotional, psychological and physical needs. Some of these activities are run by the elderly for the elderly. We have collaborated with several schools, institutions and individuals in providing volunteering opportunities that range from ad hoc participation to weekly commitments.

Good Neighbours Project
The focus will be to help the elderly in our neighborhood who are living alone, to enhance their quality of life and maximise their period of independent living in the community. We will help identify homebound elderly, temporarily or permanently as well as potential helpers from the community that can give some support to them.  Our social workers will look into providing relevant training, support to these ‘good neighbours’.  We will work extensively with various professional service providers as well as grassroot organizations.
